As we look to change the food system, we must recognize that our economy has already changed, and with it the labor and income security landscape. Inadequate incomes and job insecurity are top of mind in the struggle for food justice. The link between food security and income security is well known, but advocacy for income security policies such as basic income have often fallen outside the mandate of the food movement. In this session, Dr. Evelyn Forget and Nick Saul discuss the merits of basic income as an income security intervention, the implications it has for food security in Canada, and what role food security leaders and actionists should play in building social solidarity beyond the food movement.
